About Us

How Kumon Started

Kumon was created by a dad, who wanted the best for his son.

Kumon began in 1954 when high school math teacher Toru Kumon created daily worksheets to help his son, Takeshi, improve his calculation skills through self-learning. Takeshi’s rapid progress inspired Toru to teach neighborhood children using the same method, leading to significant improvements and the founding of the first Kumon Center in 1958.
